Florida Shores is an affordable residential community in the “Hospitality City” of Edgewater, Florida, which is located alongside the magnificent Indian River Lagoon. Edgewater is a friendly and pleasant city that boasts over 20,000 residents, great outdoor living, and affordable real estate. The city was originally called Hawks Park after Dr. John Milton Hawks who founded the community as part of a Spanish land grant purchase in 1871. Its small-town charm belies its proximity to some of the most popular locals and tourist destinations in the country, including Disney World and Kennedy Space Center.
Shopping and Dining
The Florida Shores community happily lacks the hustle and bustle of a hectic city, but that doesn’t mean it lacks the convenience of living in one. Edgewater has several shopping centers, from popular malls like Florida Shores Plaza and Publix plaza within the city itself, to nearby Daytona malls and shopping centers. In addition, Edgewater is just minutes from New Smyrna Beach’s charming boardwalk area on Flagler Avenue and Canal Street downtown.
Parks and Recreation
Edgewater may be a short drive from Disney World and Kennedy Space Center, but Florida Shores residents enjoy over one hundred acres of parkland in their own backyard. On the banks of the Indian River is Riverwa
lk, a local favorite, 3.5-mile walkway that is ideal for bicyclists, walkers, and other outdoor lovers. Veterans Park, George Kennedy Park, and Highland Shores Park, Whistle Stop Park, and Menard-May Park each boast great facilities, from lighted ball courts (tennis, racquetball, basketball etc.) to concession stands, boat ramps, playgrounds, and picnic areas. Hawks Park Recreation Complex is a 19,000 sq. ft. recreation complex with a heated pool, several lighted ball fields, conservation area, handicap-accessible nature trail, outdoor amphitheater, and more. Canaveral National Seashore is a 57,000-acre long barrier island that is home to more than 250 species of wildlife and is just minutes away. Mosquito Lagoon offers great fishing and boating.
Living
Edgewater’s investment in sustainable growth attests to the city’s commitment to responsible governance. Coronado Paint and several boat builders such as Edgewater Boats and Boston Whaler, manufacture their products in Edgewater. The Florida Shores neighborhood is a well-known, established community of affordable homes for sale and it is close to Indian River Boulevard and Park Avenue. Natural vegetation surrounds the area, which makes the area an idyllic setting. Homes for sale include a range from luxury riverfront estates to cheerful “Old Florida” style homes.
Schools, Health, Transportation
The Florida Shores community is serviced by Volusia County Schools, which includes Edgewater Public Elementary and Edgewater High School. Area colleges and universities include Daytona State College, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Stetson Univer
sity, and the University of Central Florida’s Daytona Campus, all located in Daytona Beach. Bert Fish Medical Center is a full-service hospital. The Hospice of Volusia/Flagler offers compassionate care. Residents also have access to nearby Florida Hospital-Oceanside and Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial. Votran is the public transit system and Interstates 95 and 4, and US 1, 17, and 92 are the major highways and arterials.
